What Is A Criss Cross Diamond Ring?

From the introduction, you can already tell what diamond rings are.  They simply ring that feature diamonds as embellishments. These diamonds can be big and statement-making or small and glittering beauty.

The criss cross is a symbol that features two lines or rods that intersect at a point. It serves many uses such as emblems but we’re only concerned with its use in the jewelry sector.

A criss cross ring will feature two shanks that intersect at a point. Or the criss cross symbol may be engraved on the front of the ring.

When this ring features a diamond or two that’s when we refer to it as  criss cross diamond ring.

Now, a lot of things go into the process of getting yourself one of these rings. Not to worry, we are goo g to cover everything there is to know in this guide.

Building Your Criss Cross Diamond Ring

You will have to make lots of choices when building your rings and this can become overwhelming. That is why we have decided to carefully explain each step to you.

Let’s start with the diamond selection process

What Is A Diamond?

A diamond is a clear and gorgeous gemstone that occurs naturally. The remarkable hardness and beauty of diamond have made it greatly desired by many persons whether it’s for a wedding, engagement,  birthday, or even a science experiment!

One interesting fact about diamonds is that there is no other naturally occurring gemstone that is harder than it. Diamond’s scores a whopping  10 on Moh's hardness scale.

The chances of your diamond getting chipped or cracked are very slim.  When you get yourself diamond rings or any diamond jewelry, you don’t have to bother so much about the gemstone. Isn’t that a relief?

When you think of diamonds, you will probably think of colorless. That is correct, diamonds are popular for this lack of color but diamonds can be colored too!

You can find diamonds in blue, red, yellow, brown, and even pink! If you like a little color then you sure would be getting it with your criss cross diamond rings.

It is the abundance of some trace elements that result in the color with diamonds. This happens as they are formed deep in the earth's crust under high pressure.

Diamond mines are located all over the world in places like South  Africa, India, Brazil, etc. So you don’t have to worry about the rarity much when getting one for yourself. Though completely colorless and colored gemstones are quite rare and thus more expensive.

If you’re going to get a diamond ring, you’re not going to have the jeweler put in your criss-cross rings in the rough, are you? You’re going to choose the cut style and shape you want for these gemstones.

What are these cur styles? Well, read on to find out.

Diamond Shapes And Cuts

For better understanding, we’ve classified these cuts into two, they are:

  • Brilliant Cuts
  • Step Cuts

Brilliant Cuts

Typically, these are the type of diamond cuts you would find for sake at most jewelry stores. The reason is simple, they offer exactly what a  buyer is looking for most of the time, sparkle.

Most people will judge the quality of their diamond by how much sparkle it gives off. The sparkle of a diamond in your criss cross ring is either brilliance or fire.

Brilliance is the reflection of white light as light enters your diamond while fire is the emission of rainbow colors as light enters.

If you’ve ever done across a diamond ring, you will find that it was the sparkle in your eye that drew you to the beauty of that ring.

Do you know what factor in the diamond will determine its level of shine? It’s the cut style! Simply put, the number of facets and how well the facets are cut will determine the level of sparkle your gemstone will give off.

Below are two of the most brilliant cuts explained:

  • Round Cut: As the name implies, the diamond here is cut into a  round shape. It features up to 58 facets and to date, this is the most brilliant cut style for diamonds.
  • Princess Cut: If you would rather have your criss cross diamond rings featuring corners with sparkle too, this is for you. The brilliance level of this cut is second only to the round cut. It has 50  – 58 facets.

If you are interested in getting yourself brilliant-cut diamonds, there are a lot of others to choose from. Contact our jewelry expert at  Goldia and we'll walk you through your choice.

Step Cuts

If you’re not too particular about your diamond sparkle then you should totally consider the step cuts.

If you’re wondering why they have that name, it’s because the diamonds are cut in a stair-like manner.

Unlike their brilliant variant, step cuts are done to show of the clarity of a gemstone. They usually feature a wide table that shows you clearly the presence of any inclusions and blemishes.

This can be a downside if you get a diamond that’s low in the clarity scale. If that’s what you’re planning to do, we suggest you get a brilliant-cut as the brilliance of the diamond will mask most inclusions.

Just like before, let us look at two if the most popular step cuts.

  • Emerald Cut: This cut is characterized by a large table, stair-like pavilion, and beveled edges. It has its name because it was first used on emeralds. It features 58 facets and is an elegant choice.
  • Asscher Cut: This cut was created by the Asscher brothers in the early 1990s. It has 54 facets and will give off a decent amount of brilliance but not enough to consider it a brilliant cut.

Check with a jewelry expert for other cut styles.

Determining Your Diamonds Quality

Honestly speaking, if you’re going to get yourself a criss cross diamond ring, you should be 100% sure of your diamond's quality.

Always ask for valid certifications about any diamond you are going to purchase from the seller. Even still you should understand the way the quality of a diamond is graded.

For simplicity's sake, a diamond is graded using some 4 C's which are:

  • Cut
  • Carat
  • Clarity
  • Color

Cut

When we were talking about the types of diamonds we intertwined this factor too. When you are getting yourself a diamond, make sure to get one that is certified “good” or “excellent” by the GIA.

Carat

This is a measure of the diamond's weight. Remember that a larger carat does not necessarily mean higher quality. If your budget allows it,  you should go for a higher carat. Otherwise, stick to smaller carats or settings that make the diamond look bigger; a good example is the halo setting.

Clarity

As you may have deduced from the article already, clarity is a measure of the number of inclusions and blemishes in a diamond.

Inclusions occur within the gemstone and thus are usually mined that way.  Blemishes, however, occur on the surface of the diamond; it may be man-made or natural as well.

There’s a simple grade for clarity which ranges from I – F. “I” represents  “included” while “F” represents flawless.

The trick here is to get a diamond that is eye-clean. There’s no point going higher up the scale as it will look identical to the naked eye, and that money can be spent elsewhere.

Color

Generally, the color you would get your stone in for your criss cross diamond ring is to you.

Earlier, we mentioned the varieties in the color of diamonds. Remember that the rarer or deeper the color, the more value a diamond has.

On the other hand, if you are going for colorless diamonds then there is a color scale to follow. The scale begins at “D” which is colorless and ends at “Z” which is quite yellow or brown.

The next thing to consider is the metal that you will get your criss cross rings in.

Choosing The Metal For Your Criss Cross Diamond Rings

As soon as you have chosen the diamond for your rings, the next step is to select what these rings will be made off.

There are a variety of metals to choose from. These are:

  • Gold
  • Platinum
  • Silver

Gold

This is a gorgeous metal that is timeless and classic. There are a variety of options to choose from if you’re going to get this precious metal. These  are:

  • Gold plated
  • Gold filled
  • Gold vermeil
  • Solid gold: this can further be characterized by various gold alloys. The most common alloys are yellow gold, white gold and rose gold.

If you want to find the type of gold that is right for you, you should feast your eyes at the collection of criss cross diamond bands we have in gold.

Platinum

This is a white metal that is remarkably durable. It has a more whitish appearance and luster than silver.

Platinum is well suited for everyday Wes because it is highly scratch resistant. You can even take your platinum ring for polishing when it starts to lose its luster.

One thing we love about platinum is that it is hypoallergenic. You don’t have to worry about red or itchy skin. It’s a great choice but is relatively more expensive than its gold counterpart, white gold.

Silver

This precious metal is just as timeless as gold. It has an elegant whitish-gray appearance.

You could get your criss cross rings in pure silver but it won’t hold shape. The reason is silver is too soft, so it can easily get scratched. The solution is to get alloyed silver.

The most common alloy of silver is sterling silver. The other alloy metals are usually present in very small percentages because their sole purpose is to increase silver’s durability.

Silver is subject to tarnishing but with proper care, your silver criss cross ring will last for a very long time.
